There are so many people debating whether or not to take the PMP exam now since PMI will delay its PMP exam change from December to July 2020. Here are my 5 reasons why you should get your PMP now.
There is less pressure.
Passing the PMP exam is a process. First, you have to get the personal development units (PDUs), gain the experience, submit the PMP application for approval, read and re-read the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), pay the money and pass the exam. Starting now in 2019 gives you ample time to complete the entire process.
This is downtime.
Things are slow in December. People have taken off for the Christmas holiday. It will not always stay this way. Come January, things will ramp up due to the New Year. Furthermore, you will have new work to do. Use this downtime to pass the PMP.
You have practice test materials
Right now there is an abundance of FREE PMP online simulator, flashcards and study guides. There is usually a 90-120 day wait for credible PMP prep materials. Moreover, during December lots of companies are offering sales that you can take advantage of. Even waiting to January 2020 will increase the price of the exact same test materials.
The PMP requirements may change
Whenever the Project Management Institute (PMI) changes anything the requirements change. I will give you an example. When I was renewing my PMP the first time, PMI changed its recertification guidelines from education to education and giving back. Since I was unclear about the new guidelines, I recertified under the old guideline window. When I recertified the second time, the giving back guidelines were 3 years old and I had a better understanding of what was expected of me.
The same thing here. Right now you know what the PMP expectations are. When the exam changes in July, you won’t.
Great end of year personal achievement
Achieving your PMP would be a great way to end this year. You can post this on your annual review. There are so many people who dream about taking the PMP, take the PMP and fail, and get discouraged along the way. Your passing the PMP is a momentous personal and professional achievement. Be proud of it.
Bonus – You get to apply your PMP in 2020
It is one thing to pass your PMP exam. It is another thing to apply. Getting your PMP now gives you 7 months to apply what you have learned on your job and in the real world. When I was a newly minted PMP, I realized the transferable skills and applied them outside of work like Meetups, professional organizations, even on home projects. Waiting until spring 2020 robs you of killing the learning curve that everyone else will have since they’ve waited until the last time to pass the exam.
So there you have it. My 5 reasons (and 1 bonus) why you should study and pass the PMP right now instead of waiting around for the new changes.
